UIN Bukittinggi Champions Decolonisation of Research, AI Ethics at Global Stage via 2nd ISRF
BUKITTINGGI— Sjech M. Djamil Djambek State Islamic University (UIN) Bukittinggi has successfully hosted The 2nd International Student Research Forum (ISRF-2). Held from April 23 to June 4, 2026, the academic platform served as a strategic avenue to strengthen global research collaboration while broadening academic and cultural horizons among cross-border students.
Centred on the theme "Cultivating Intellect, Preserving Nature, and Upholding Ethics in a Tech-Driven World," the forum underscores UIN Bukittinggi’s active commitment to elevating student research onto the international stage.
Dr Irwandi, steering committee chair of the 2nd ISRF, stated that this year’s academic competition was divided into three strategic clusters: Ecotheology, Science, and Disaster Management; Education; and Language and Literature.
To maintain academic rigor and objectivity, the organizing committee appointed an expert panel of cross-institutional judges, including Dr Nur Azmi Alwi (Universitas Negeri Padang), Dr Yunhendri Danhas (Head Institute Indonesia), Dr Albert (Universitas Deztron Indonesia), and Dr Nofel Nofiandri (UIN Bukittinggi).
The forum's climax featured Frans Dokman, a senior researcher from the Nijmegen Institute for Mission Studies at Radboud University, the Netherlands. In his keynote address, Dokman delivered a critical analysis of modern research directions navigating digital disruption and global bias, focusing on three crucial pillars:
1. Decolonisation of Research Methodology: Dokman urged young academics to challenge Western-centric perspectives. He highlighted the necessity of contextualising scientific methodology so that it remains relevant, equitable, and capable of elevating local wisdom alongside regional realities.
2. AI Ethics and Human Agency: In response to the rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI), he warned that technology must function purely as an analytical tool, not as a replacement for critical thinking or human agency.
3. Academic Integrity: He called on researchers to maintain research ethics, authenticity, and academic rigor amid the pressures of the digital transformation era.
List of Award Winners:
Education Cluster (Best Paper): Awarded to Dina, Sri Bulan, and Wili Widiensesi (Master's in Islamic Education) for their research titled "Developing Literacy-Based Islamic Storybooks for Creed (Aqidah) Instruction in Senior High Schools."
Ecotheology, Science, and Disaster Management Cluster (Best Paper): Won by Filda (Master's in Islamic Law) for her study titled "Climate Breakdown as a Disruption of Maqashid Dharuriyah: An Analysis of Al-Shatibi's Thought on Global Ecological Vulnerability in the Modern Era."* The work received high praise for successfully integrating classical Islamic jurisprudence with the modern ecological crisis.
Runner-Up Paper: Awarded to Erni Kasmawati et al. for their critical paper titled "The Human Capital Crisis in Education: Assessing the Impacts of Low Literacy and Numeracy Skills."
Best Presenter Award: Won by Agil Saputra et al., who impressed the panel of judges with their articulate public delivery.
Through the success of the 2nd ISRF, the student research organization at UIN Bukittinggi has proven its capacity to drive the emergence of young scholars ready to address global challenges while remaining firmly rooted in local wisdom. (IRWANDI)
