When Tradition Gives Wings: UIN Bukittinggi Students Soar on Global Stage with Fusion of Faith and Culture
PADANG, INDONESIA– Under the dimming stage lights of the closing ceremony of the SEIBA International Festival 2026 here on Sunday night (July 12), a group of young performers stood catching their breath.
Sweat soaked through their traditional Minangkabau attire, slowly drying under the warmth of thunderous applause from an international audience. Gleaming on their chests were platinum medals. But on this night, it was not just the metal around their necks that shone—it was a newfound confidence they were taking back home to Bukittinggi.
For these students from the Sjech M. Djamil Djambek State Islamic University (UIN) Bukittinggi, the festival was far more than a hunt for medals. SEIBA—which stands for Seni (Art) , Budaya (Culture), and Akademik (Academics—served as a learning space where tradition, science, creativity, and spirituality converged on a single, mutually reinforcing stage
Here, their unique identity took shape. Islamic values were not presented rigidly; instead, they flowed through the fluid movements of pencak silat (traditional martial arts), the delicate brushstrokes of calligraphy, the emotional depth of theatrical monologues, and the visual sensitivity of short films. Recitations of the Quran blended seamlessly with sharp arguments in international seminar forums.
Through their performances, the students delivered a simple message to the world: being modern does not mean uprooting oneself from cultural heritage and faith.

Nurturing Legacy, Climbing the Ladder of Success
"This achievement represents the pinnacle of a gradual journey built on discipline and consistency," said Prof. Dr. Edi Rosman, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs at UIN Bukittinggi. He was reflecting on the university's spectacular haul—a sweep of nine gold medals, two silvers, and the coveted Platinum Medal—which he insisted was no overnight miracle
Their path to success can be traced back to the SEIBA 2024 edition at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang. Back then, the Bukittinggi contingent laid the groundwork by securing two gold medals in religious categories—Quranic recitation (MTQ) and Quranic memorisation (MHQ)—alongside six silver medals across various arts categories, ranging from Quranic poetry to theatre.
A year later, their performance surged. At SEIBA 2025, they clinched a Platinum Medal in contemporary dance, three golds in monologue, pop solo vocals, and short film, a silver medal, and the Best Presenter award at an international scientific forum.
This consistent year-on-year improvement culminated in their sweet victory in 2026. Behind the dazzling stage lights and applause lay long hours of rigorous practice, sustained mentoring, and an institutional commitment to nurturing young talents.

For the Rector of UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, Professor Silfia Hanani, this milestone is proof that an education integrating science, art, and spirituality can produce a generation that is not only academically excellent but also strong in character.
"This achievement proves that the integration of science, arts, and spiritual values is not just classroom theory," Prof Silfia said. "Our students have demonstrated on a global stage that a strong character rooted in local tradition is a vital asset to compete and gain global recognition. The university remains committed to nurturing these creative spaces, fostering a golden generation that is globally competitive without losing its identity."
As the closing ceremony ended and the stage lights dimmed, what remained was far more than a collection of medals destined for the university's trophy cabinet. Instead, a deeper message resonated: tradition is not a burden of the past that hinders progress. Rather, it is an anchor that grounds them, and wings that allow the younger generation to fly higher.
From Bukittinggi, these youths have proven that local identity and global competitiveness are not opposing forces, but complementary strengths. (IN)
