Becoming Ambassadors of Goodness: The Lifelong Trust of UIN Bukittinggi Graduates
BUKITTINGGI — Behind the collective sigh of relief and emotional tears of thousands of parents filling the Student Centre Auditorium at Sjech M. Djamil Djambek State Islamic University / Universitas Islam Negeri Bukittinggi (UIN Bukittinggi) in West Sumatra, a profound transition is taking place. Being a student carries a set time frame defined by semesters and course credits. Yet, once the graduation cap is secured, the bond as an alumnus remains forever.
In an ever-evolving modern society, university graduates are no longer judged solely by their diplomas or technical competencies. Amidst a growing crisis of role models, social polarization, and rapid technological disruptions that often erode ethical standards, figures who embody integrity and bring calm are increasingly vital. This underscores the crucial role of an "ambassador of goodness"—individuals who are intellectually sharp while serving as moral anchors in turbulent times.
This enduring responsibility was underscored by the Rector of UIN Bukittinggi, Prof. Dr. Silfia Hanani, during the university's 13th Commencement Ceremony held over two days, September 16–17, 2026.
“UIN Bukittinggi alumni must become ambassadors of goodness. Never stop learning, never lose your integrity, never lose your humanity, never forget your roots, and strive to be of benefit to others,” Prof. Silfia told the graduating class and distinguished guests.
During the solemn ceremony, a total of 1,723 graduates were officially conferred. The cohort comprised 1,578 bachelor’s degree recipients, 137 master’s graduates, and 8 doctoral graduates—marking a historic milestone as the university's inaugural doctoral graduation.
A Victory for Parents and a Foundation for Humanity
For the state Islamic university situated in the iconic town of Jam Gadang, commencement is more than a mere end to academic studies; it is a moment of deep gratitude for the families’ long journeys. Prof. Silfia emphasized that the graduates' achievements were built on the moral and material sacrifices of their parents.
“This is a day of victory for mothers and fathers who have sacrificed so much, both morally and financially, to guide their children toward earning their academic degrees. I hold firm faith that UIN Bukittinggi alumni will emerge as successful individuals in the future,” she expressed.
However, the Rector reminded the audience that true success extends beyond academic accolades. Real-world impact is tested when graduates step into society. Hence, a balanced synthesis of intellect, ethics, and spiritual intelligence forms the bedrock of the university's education.
“Never stop learning, because UIN Bukittinggi students are individuals of strong character, possessing high intellect, broad knowledge, ethics, sound morals, and spiritual intelligence,” she advised.
Five Core Principles to Navigate Global Challenges
To help graduates navigate an increasingly competitive global job market, Prof Silfia Hanani offered five core principles as a moral compass:
1. Never stop learning amidst continuous global change.
2. Never compromise on integrity, wherever you may be.
3. Never lose your humanity in every decision and action.
4. Never forget your roots as the anchor of your identity.
5. Be a force for good and serve the broader community.
“Strive to be intellectual, highly ethical individuals who make a meaningful impact on society. Go as far as you can to pursue knowledge, but never lose your identity,” Prof. Silfia urged.
She added that active engagement in the workforce and society represents the practical application of their academic training. “Be ambassadors of goodness for UIN Bukittinggi and protect the institution’s reputation out in the world. I entrust you all to continue innovating and competing effectively in the global workplace,” she added.
Recognizing Excellence and Real-World Impact
In recognition of academic distinction, UIN Bukittinggi presented special honors to top-performing graduates and authors of outstanding master's theses and undergraduate dissertations. The accolades were symbolically awarded alongside certificates and savings accounts supported by Bank Nagari.
An atmosphere of quiet emotion washed over the auditorium as graduates embraced their parents. The 13th Commencement Ceremony reinforced UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi's commitment to transforming higher Islamic education into a force for tangible societal good.
