The Halal Alliance: Inside the New Academic Pact Between UIN Bukittinggi and Krirk University
JAKARTA— In a significant push forward for Islamic higher education in Southeast Asia, Indonesia’s Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi has forged a strategic alliance with the International Islamic College of Bangkok (IICB) at Thailand’s Krirk University.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the Annual Meeting of the Asian Islamic Universities Association (AIUA) hosted by UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, marks a concrete commitment by both institutions to build a cross-border ecosystem for academic integration.
The signing ceremony was attended by a high-level delegation from IICB Krirk University, including Prof. Dr. Jaran Maluleem, Vice-President for International Affairs; Dr. Sarawut Laesan, Dean of IICB; and Mr. Piranut Boonmalert, the lecturer of IICB. Representing UIN Bukittinggi were Dr. Edi Rosman, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Alumni, and Cooperation, alongside Dr. Irwandi, Head of the International Relations Center.
Speaking separately, Prof. Dr. Silfia Hanani, Rector of UIN Bukittinggi, expressed deep appreciation for the international pact. She emphasized that collaborating with IICB Krirk University is a progressive milestone in elevating the university's global footprint. Prof. Hanani aims to translate this agreement into concrete, innovative programs that directly enhance academic standards, drive international research publications, and boost graduate employability.
The collaboration takes aim at a rapidly expanding frontier: the multi-billion-dollar halal industry and business ecosystem currently booming across the ASEAN region.
Krirk University’s IICB brings to the table its pioneering academic reputation in Islamic business management within Thailand—particularly in Islamic finance and halal tourism governance. This aligns seamlessly with UIN Bukittinggi’s deep academic wellspring in Sharia law, Islamic education (tarbiyah), and Islamic economics.
By leveraging faculty exchanges, collaborative research, and joint curriculum development, the partnership aims to cultivate a new generation of professionals—scholars who are not only academically elite but equipped to drive the global Islamic economy forward.
