Science, Religion Align as UIN Bukittinggi, Malaysia's USAS Forge Strategic Alliance
JAKARTA — Separating religious studies from advancements in science and technology is increasingly seen as a trigger for moral disorientation in the modern era. Conversely, technological progress without spiritual anchors and human values risks becoming destructive.
To address this challenge, the Sjech M. Djamil Djambek State Islamic University (UIN) Bukittinggi and Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah (USAS) of Malaysia have officially inked a strategic cooperation agreement to strengthen the standardization of scholarly integration in Southeast Asia.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) took place on the sidelines of the Asian Islamic University Association (AIUA) Annual General Meeting, held from June 23 to 25, 2026, at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. USAS attended as one of the founding institutions and the current secretariat of AIUA, while UIN Bukittinggi is an active member consistently expanding its international network.
The ceremony was attended by USAS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Sabri Bin Wan Yusof, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Research Affairs Prof. Dr. Shamsul Jamali bin Yeob, and AIUA Executive Secretariat Dr. Salina binti Khalid. UIN Bukittinggi was represented by Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Alumni, and Cooperation Dr. H. Edi Rosman, alongside the Head of the International Relations Center, Dr. H. Irwandi. Both institutions agreed that bridging Islamic values with science, technology, and the humanities has reached a crucial stage in molding a generation capable of adapting to changing times. This shared philosophy is no longer confined to an ivory tower of theory but is being directly translated into concrete academic programs.
The agreed agenda encompasses interdisciplinary research collaborations, faculty and student exchanges, and inclusive curriculum development aimed at producing globally competitive graduates with deep spiritual grounding.
Separately, UIN Bukittinggi Rector Prof. Silfia Hanani welcomed the strategic partnership, describing the collaboration as a tangible effort to address global challenges through an educational model that harmonizes technological sophistication with spiritual nobility.
The shared vision and scholarly philosophy between UIN Bukittinggi and USAS are expected to accelerate the campus’s internationalization while fostering an academic ecosystem that brings blessings to the universe (Rahmatan lil 'Alamin).
