Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day: UIN Bukittinggi Nurtures Social Responsibility
BUKITTINGGI —On Friday morning (14/8/2026), the stretch along Jalan Gurun Aua in Kubang Putiah came alive with unprecedented energy. The Rector, university leaders, lecturers, and administrative staff of UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi joined hands, walking side by side down the street. Institutional hierarchies dissolved as they picked up trash, swept sidewalks, and cleared drainage channels together.

This mass community action by UIN Bukittinggi’s academic community was held to commemorate the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Yet, beneath the rhythmic scraping of brooms and hoes lies a profound message: this joint effort was not merely a one-off performance.
Independence is often celebrated with visual decorations and ceremonial stages. In truth, its most authentic meaning lives in the small things around us—in how a community collectively cares for its shared living space. This environmental cleanup is ultimately just a catalyst. Brooms will wear out and waste will return tomorrow, but the values of care and the spirit of gotong royong (mutual cooperation) must continuously be infused into the collective consciousness. These two values serve as a social fortress against the onslaught of modern individualism.
"Let us prove to the public that UIN Bukittinggi's academic community possesses a high level of care for the cleanliness and comfort of our environment. This spirit of togetherness and gotong royong is an integral part of our effort to fulfill the promise of independence," Silfia stated.
Amid the dripping sweat, warmth trickled through light banter and casual conversations among participants. Ultimately, gotong royong revealed its truest form that it is not merely physical labor, but a medium to rekindle empathy and a sense of shared belonging.
The real challenge for the university community does not lie in how spotless Jalan Gurun Aua remains once Friday passes. The true homework is ensuring that the "flame" of care and the tradition of mutual cooperation do not die out after the celebrations end. After all, a vibrant campus is not just a place that births grand ideas, but a space that consistently nurtures human values. (IRWANDI)
