Grace in Conduct, Measured in Action: UIN Bukittinggi 81st Indonesian Independence Day Message
Bukittinggi- A gentle morning breeze swept across the parade grounds of Sjech M. Djambek State Islamic University (UIN) Bukittinggi on Monday (Aug 17), where hundreds of academic staff and students gathered to mark Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day.
Yet beyond the ceremonial uniforms and marching drills, the university's rector, Professor Silfia Hanani, delivered a solemn call for deep institutional reflection.

In her address, Prof Silfia urged academia to reconsider the core purpose of higher education: to what extent can academic intellect truly touch and improve the daily lives of the public?
The pursuit of knowledge begins from within, Prof Silfia noted, stressing that moral integrity and ethics must serve as the primary anchors before academics attempt to drive external change. Amid the clamour of modern freedom, she said, grace in conduct and measured actions define a true scholar.
These ethical foundations are not mere administrative rules, but principles guiding propriety, academic honesty, and national values.
"The grace in conduct and measured actions of an academic reflect the true standing of this institution," Prof Silfia declared from the podium.
Beyond High-Impact Journals
Turning to academic output, Prof Silfia highlighted the need for faculty members to secure recognition on the global stage through peer-reviewed international journals.
However, she cautioned against viewing academic publishing purely as a metric for credit points or digital archives. True scholarship, she argued, must translate into real-world societal benefits.
"Lecturers must challenge themselves to publish in reputable international journals," she said. "Crucially, the ultimate objective must be solving real-world problems and serving the broader public."
Public Engagement
Prof Silfia concluded her speech by calling on scholars to step outside academic bubbles and actively contribute to public discourse. Universities, she emphasized, must not remain isolated ivory towers.
By sharing constructive expertise across mainstream media, academics can provide guidance, foster healthy debates, and enrich public understanding.
Following the address, the Satyalancana Karya Satya honorific medals were conferred upon 18 civil servants in recognition of their dedicated service to the nation. The ceremony was immediately followed by a tree-planting initiative across the campus grounds.
The morning ceremony concluded with a shared commitment to honoring national independence through ethical integrity and public service. The day's events wrapped up in the evening with congregational Maghrib prayers, joint Dzikir, and collective prayers. [IRWANDI]
